In this blog, I’ll give you a quick look at the exciting new AI-powered rewrite feature in Notepad for Windows 11. This feature allows you to rewrite selected text, change its tone, and adjust its length—similar to the rewrite functionality previously seen in Microsoft Edge.
This feature is currently available to users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program (Dev and Canary channels). Microsoft has not announced a general release date yet. If you’re in the Insider Program but don’t see the Rewrite option, ensure you have the latest preview of Windows 11 installed and update Notepad via the Microsoft Store.
How to Rewrite Text Using AI in Notepad on Windows 11

Update: The Rewrite Text AI feature in Notepad is officially available for all users.
1. Click on the Start menu and search for Notepad.
2. Open an existing text file or start composing new text.
3. Ensure you’re signed in with your Microsoft account, whether it’s a free account or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

4. Once signed in, you’ll see the Rewrite option at the top right of Notepad. Highlight the text you want to rewrite and click the Rewrite button.

5. Alternatively, right-click the selected text and choose Rewrite from the context menu.

6. When you click Rewrite, the AI processes the text and presents a new version. Review the changes and click the Replace button to apply the AI-generated text.
7. If you don’t like the result, you can use the feature to adjust your text in various ways. It allows you to make the text shorter or longer, switch between tones such as formal or casual, and optimize the content for specific formats, like marketing.
8. Review the generated versions and click the Replace button to apply the changes to your text.

AI credits are required to use this feature. Free accounts get 15 tokens per month, while Microsoft 365 subscribers receive 60 tokens per month. These tokens are shared across all AI products in Windows 11 and reset monthly.
