Hello everyone, Mao here! In today’s lesson, we’re going to walk through the steps on how to change the default search engine on your web browser to ChatGPT Search. If you’ve grown tired of the results from Google or if Bing isn’t cutting it, you’ll be happy to know that it’s now possible to set ChatGPT Search as your default option.
You can make this change on browsers like Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Arc, Brave, and virtually any other Chromium-based browser. We’ll cover two main ways you can do this: using an extension from OpenAI or making manual changes to your browser settings. Let’s dive in!

Method 1: Using the ChatGPT Search Extension
To begin, you can easily replace Google Search with ChatGPT by installing the official extension from OpenAI. Here’s how:
- Open your browser: I’ll use Google Chrome as an example, but the steps are the same for most Chromium-based browsers.
- Visit the Chrome Web Store: Go to the page for the ChatGPT Search extension and click Add to Chrome.
- Pin the Extension (optional): Once installed, you can pin the extension to the top-right corner of your browser for easy access.
- Test It: After installing, open a new tab. You’ll notice that the search box is gone, and searches will now be made directly through the address bar. Type a query, for example, “Enable Hibernation on Windows 11,” and the search results will come directly from ChatGPT.
The process for other browsers like Microsoft Edge is almost identical. Simply head to the Chrome Web Store, click Get or Add to Edge, and follow the on-screen prompts to install the extension. Afterward, you may need to manually enable the extension via the browser’s settings.
Method 2: Manually Setting ChatGPT as Your Default Search Engine
If you prefer not to use an extension, you can manually set ChatGPT as your default search engine. Here’s how:
- Remove Any Existing Extensions (if applicable): If you’ve installed the extension before, go ahead and remove it from your browser.
- Navigate to the Search Engine Settings: In Chrome, type chrome://settings/searchEngines in the address bar and press Enter. This page allows you to manage your search engines.
- Add ChatGPT as a Search Engine: On the search engine settings page, click Add. Name it “ChatGPT”, use chat.openai.com as the URL (I’ll provide a link in the description for convenience), and hit Add.
- Set ChatGPT as Default: Once you’ve added ChatGPT, you can make it your default search engine. Simply click the three dots next to ChatGPT and select Make Default.
Now, when you open a new tab or type a query in the address bar, your searches will be powered by ChatGPT.
Using ChatGPT Search in Other Browsers
If you use other browsers like Microsoft Edge, Arc, or Brave, you can follow the same basic steps. The search engine settings are similar across most Chromium-based browsers. You can even use the same path in Edge as you would in Chrome to manage search engines.
On Edge, simply navigate to the settings page, click Add to set ChatGPT, and choose Make Default. It works exactly like it does on Chrome, and now, every search you make will go directly to ChatGPT!
Additional Considerations
- Subscription Options: ChatGPT Search is free to use, but if you don’t have the ChatGPT Plus subscription, you may encounter limits on the number of searches you can perform every few hours. With ChatGPT Plus, you get more searches, but there’s still a limit.
- Restoring Previous Settings: If you ever decide to revert to your old search engine, simply go back to the search engine settings and select your preferred provider.
Conclusion
And there you have it! Those are the two easy methods for changing the default search engine on your browser to ChatGPT Search. Whether you prefer using an extension or manually adjusting the settings, it’s a simple process that will bring a new search experience to your browsing.
