Windows automatically assigns drive letters to hard drives, external drives, and all disk partitions. But these drive letters are not permanent if you can change the drive letter to personalize your Windows 11 PC.
There are various ways by which you can change the drive letters on your Windows 11 PC. Here we will discuss two ways by which you can change a drive letter on your Windows 11.
How to Change Drive Letter on Windows 11
A drive can be identified by its drive letter in the Windows operating system. It’s important to remember that the Windows operating system and system files are stored on specific drives. The C: drive (for Windows OS) and the drive where program files are installed should not be changed. If the drive letter assignment to these drives is changed, the software may stop working.
You should only change the drive letter that is not associated with windows os and system files. For that, follow the following steps:
1. Using Computer Management
One of the most common ways of changing a drive letter is to use Disk Management on Windows 11.
Here are the steps on how you can do it:
1. Search for Computer Management on the search bar and open it.
2. Now click on Disk Manager under the Storage option to see the disk partition and its drive letter.
3. This window contains information about your existing drives or partitions. Disk 0, Disk 1, and Disk 2 represent how many storage units, such as Hard Drives or SSD are installed on your system with the associated drive letter.
4. To change the drive letter, choose the drive you want to change the letter for and click the box.
5. It will have diagonal patterns inside the box, which indicate you have selected the drive.
6. After that, right-click on it and click on Change Drive Letter and Path.
7. On the pop-up window, click the Change button.
8. Now click on the drop-down menu next to Assign the following drive letter and select the preferred drive letter.
9. After that, click on OK and a pop-up will warn you about changing your drive letter.
10. Click Yes to continue, and then restart your computer.
11. After Windows has restarted, the drive letter should be changed. You can check it by using the File Explorer or the Disk Manager.
2. Using Settings
There is another, simpler way of changing a drive letter on Windows 11 using the Settings app.
To open Setting, press the Win + I shortcut key or follow the following steps:
1. Click on the Windows icon to open the Start Menu and click on Settings.
2. It will bring up the settings window. Now, click on the System tab from the left panel of the Settings window.
3. Then, select the Storage options present to the right of your screen.
4. Then scroll down and click on Advanced storage settings to expand it. Now, click on the Disks & volumes option.
5. Now, select the drive whose letter you want to change, then click on Properties.
6. After that, click on the Change drive letter.
7. A pop-up window will appear. Here, choose your preferred drive letter from the drop-down menu.
8. Now, click on OK to change the drive letter on Windows 11.
